Co-Host Sunny Hostin Calmly Agitates Bill Maher
Bill Maher, the controversial comedian and host known for his sharp and uncensored commentary, appeared on “The View” on Tuesday, May 21st, to promote his new book, “What This Comedian Said Will Shock You.” Maher, who often finds himself at odds with both conservative and liberal ideologies, has garnered attention over the last several years for his “anti-woke” stance, a topic that ignited a particularly tense exchange with co-host Sunny Hostin.
Sunny Hostin, known for her tough questioning and composed demeanor, confronted Maher directly about his use of the term “woke.” Hostin, who has been a co-host of “The View” since 2016, is adept at maintaining her composure while engaging in challenging conversations. She admitted to altering her planned questions after Maher weaponized the term “woke” in an earlier segment, arguing that the word has been co-opted and distorted by right-wing rhetoric.
During the exchange, Maher appeared visibly unsettled and struggled to maintain eye contact with Hostin. As she persisted with her composed questioning, Maher’s demeanor became increasingly frazzled. At one point, in defense of his view that modern-day liberals have strayed from their principles, Maher made a controversial joke that did not sit well with the live studio audience. “I mean, I think we agree about the danger of the super far right, and I can’t say it enough, I think they’re the bigger threat. But, don’t tell me that the left hasn’t changed,” Maher said. “I mean, I’m old enough to remember when it was the conservatives who hated the Jews, OK?”
Despite the palpable tension, Maher was quick to clarify that his remark was intended as a joke. This did little to alleviate the discomfort in the room. Maher, who was brought on as a rare three-segment guest, continued to discuss hot topics and promote his book. Throughout the segments, Hostin, though not directly questioning Maher in the third segment, continued to interject with pointed side comments such as “you’ve changed.” Leave it to Sunny to make for great TV.
“The View” is renowned for its dramatic and “Rewind-Worthy” moments, and Maher’s appearance certainly added to that legacy. Xtralites, what did you think of the back-and-forth between Sunny and Bill?
