Disney fans, get ready for some nostalgic excitement! The highly anticipated sequel to the beloved 2003 comedy, “Freaky Friday,” has officially started filming, and Disney has given us a first look behind the scenes. The iconic duo, Lindsay Lohan and Jamie Lee Curtis, are back to reprise their roles as Anna and Tess Coleman, respectively.
The announcement has been met with a wave of enthusiasm from fans who have eagerly awaited the return of this dynamic pair. “Freaky Friday 2” is set to hit theaters in 2025, putting to rest any rumors that the sequel might be exclusive to Disney+. The original film was a box office hit, grossing $160 million worldwide, and the sequel aims to capture that same magic.
In addition to Lohan and Curtis, many familiar faces are returning to the cast, including Mark Harmon, Chad Michael Murray, Christina Vidal Mitchell, Haley Hudson, Lucille Soong, Stephen Tobolowsky, and Rosalind Chao. New cast members bringing fresh energy to the sequel include Julia Butters, Manny Jacinto, Maitreyi Ramakrishnan, and Sophia Hammons.
The film is directed by Nisha Ganatra, known for her work on Hulu’s “Welcome to Chippendales,” “The High Note,” and “Late Night.” Fans can expect her unique vision and storytelling prowess to bring a fresh perspective to the sequel.
The journey to “Freaky Friday 2” began in earnest when Jamie Lee Curtis expressed her interest in a sequel during an appearance on “The View” in October 2022. She revealed that she had personally written to Disney to pitch the idea. The buzz continued throughout 2023 until Disney officially announced in March that the sequel was moving forward.
Producer Andrew Gunn, who worked on the original film, returns for the sequel, joined by former Disney executive Kristin Burr. With such a talented team behind the scenes, “Freaky Friday 2” is poised to become another family favorite.
