The 2024 BMI R&B/Hip-Hop Awards took place on September 5, 2024, at the Fairmont Century Plaza in Los Angeles, and it was a night to remember! The biggest highlight? SZA walked away with multiple honors, including BMI’s R&B/Hip-Hop Songwriter of the Year and Song of the Year for her hit “Kill Bill.” The track, which topped the Billboard Hot 100 and garnered over one billion streams on Spotify, was co-written with Rob Bisel and Carter Lang.
In her heartfelt acceptance speech, SZA expressed, “Songwriting awards mean the most to me because when I started and needed people to write for me, I didn’t have anybody. I’m grateful to be honored today because there are so many songwriters here that made me who I am.”
The evening also saw Babyface honored with the BMI Icon Award. The legendary artist was celebrated for his decades-long influence in the industry. Lil Wayne paid tribute to his mentor with a touching speech before Babyface surprised the audience with a live performance of his 1990 hit “Whip Appeal.”
