From Broadway Babies to Broadway Mamas
Broadway was alive with energy and nostalgia at the opening night of Mama, I’m a Big Girl Now! at New World Stages, and I had the absolute pleasure of covering the red carpet for Xtra Access TV. The star-studded event brought together Broadway legends, fans, and a healthy dose of Hairspray magic, making it a night to remember.
The show stars Laura Bell Bundy, Kerry Butler and Marissa Jaret Winokur—a trio of powerhouse performers who originated the roles of Amber, Penny, and Tracy in the Tony Award-winning musical Hairspray. Their chemistry and talent lit up the stage, but the excitement started well before the curtain rose.
Red Carpet Magic
I had so much fun chatting with the stars of the show and legendary Broadway icons like Hairspray creators Marc Shaiman and Scott Whitman, whose work shaped an entire generation of musical theater lovers. I even got to fangirl over hosting legend Marc Summers, who graciously told me I was a great host myself—cue internal screaming!
Broadway Love in the Air
Throughout the night, I asked attendees about their all-time favorite musicals, and the votes were tight: Broadway is loved in all its forms, but Gypsy stole the show as the fan favorite. Everyone was brimming with stories about their love for the stage, and it was heartwarming to see such a genuine appreciation for the art of musical theater.
A Celebration of Friendship and Motherhood
The show itself is a celebration of the enduring friendship between Bundy, Butler, and Winokur, who first bonded over their shared Broadway beginnings in Hairspray. Now, as mothers and seasoned performers, they’ve created a show that’s as heartfelt as it is hilarious, featuring unforgettable performances of iconic Hairspray hits, creative medleys, and even a few parodies.
“It’s like three friends in the sandbox just having the best time,” Laura Bell Bundy told us on the carpet. The trio’s infectious energy was palpable, both on stage and off, as they reflected on their careers and the journey from “Broadway babies” to “Broadway mamas.”
A Must-See
Produced by Lisa Dozier Shacket and featuring musical direction by Andrew Byrne, Mama, I’m a Big Girl Now! is a limited run you won’t want to miss. With performances through December 8, this show is more than just a trip down memory lane—it’s a heartfelt tribute to friendship, motherhood, and the power of Broadway to bring people together.
