Olympian Loses Wedding Ring in the Seine, and His Apology Letter to His Wife Restores Your Faith in Love

Italian high jumper Gianmarco Tamberi is openly expressing his regret after losing his wedding ring during the Opening Ceremony of the 2024 Paris Olympics.

“I’m sorry my love, I’m so sorry,” he wrote in a heartfelt Instagram post on Saturday, July 27.

Tamberi, 32, who has been married to Chiara Bontempi Temberi, 29, for nearly two years, shared that the ring slipped from his finger while he was proudly carrying Italy’s flag in the Seine River. He speculated on the possible reasons behind the mishap: “Too much water, too many kg lost in the past few months, or maybe the uncontrollable enthusiasm of what we were doing. Probably all three.”

Describing his frantic effort to retrieve the ring, he said, “I saw it fly… I followed her with a glance until I saw her bounce inside the boat. A glimmer of hope… But unfortunately, the bounce was in the wrong direction. Floating in the air, I watched it dive into the water as if it were exactly where it wanted to be.”

Despite the unfortunate incident, Tamberi chose to focus on the positives, noting the significance of the location. “I couldn’t imagine a better place for it to remain forever than the riverbed of the city of love, lost while I tried to carry the Italian tricolor as high as possible during the opening ceremony of the most important sporting event in the world,” he reflected. “If I had to invent an apology, I could never have come up with something this imaginative.”
