History in the Making: Night One of the 2024 Democratic National Convention
Xtralites, the 2024 Democratic National Convention (DNC) kicked off with an energy that can only be described as electric. This unprecedented convention was one for the history books, not just because of the stellar lineup of speakers but because of the momentous shift in political leadership. Just last month, sitting President Joe Biden made the historic decision to step down, passing the Democratic ticket to Vice President Kamala Harris. And tonight, he took the stage for what might be one of his most emotional addresses yet.
Tony Goldwyn, best known for his role as President Fitz on Scandal, taking the helm as the host. Hollywood couldn’t resist being part of this politically charged moment, and Goldwyn was quick to note that Kamala Harris “served the best opening act.” In an unexpected appearance, Harris delivered the official opening remarks of the convention, setting the tone by celebrating President Biden and the legacy he’s leaving behind.
The night was imbued with a profound sense of gratitude, honoring those who paved the way. The iconic Congresswoman Maxine Waters brought the audience to its feet with a tribute to civil rights leader Fannie Lou Hamer, while a standing ovation erupted for Rev. Jesse Jackson, who made history with his two presidential runs in the 1980s. These tributes weren’t just nods to the past—they were calls to continue the fight for justice and equality.
One of the most poignant moments of the night came when former Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton took the stage. Greeted by an extended standing ovation, Clinton spoke passionately about the glass ceiling that still remains unbroken. She honored the trailblazing women who came before her, from the suffragettes to Shirley Chisholm and Geraldine Ferraro. As she encouraged the crowd with her new tagline, “Keep Going!”, a chant of “Lock Him Up!” directed at Donald Trump rippled through the audience. Clinton, ever the stateswoman, refrained from joining in but couldn’t hide her smile, knowing the power of her words and the weight of her legacy.
But the night belonged to President Joe Biden. Introduced by his daughter, Ashley Biden, the atmosphere was charged with emotion as he took the stage. The crowd’s overwhelming appreciation was a testament to his courageous decision to step down, a move that will undoubtedly shape his legacy. As speakers throughout the night thanked him for his honor, valor, and commitment to the nation, the crowd chanted, “Thank you, Joe!”
Biden’s speech was filled with heartfelt moments, celebrating his family, particularly First Lady Jill Biden, who he said still makes his heart go “boom, boom, boom.” But his main message was one of love for the United States. He threw his full endorsement behind Vice President Kamala Harris and her running mate Tim Walz, urging Americans to look forward and embrace the future.
Xtralites, night one of the DNC was a powerful reminder of the progress we’ve made and the work still to be done. What are your thoughts so far on this history-making convention? Share your thoughts and let’s keep the conversation going!
