How the Tragedy Unfolded
- The Night of the Incident: The 31-year-old second-year postgraduate trainee doctor had dinner with her juniors and retired to rest in the hospital’s seminar hall around 2 a.m. on August 9. The next morning, her semi-nude body was discovered in the hall, showing clear signs of rape and murder.
- Community Response: Junior doctors at the hospital immediately halted work across all departments, except emergency services, demanding swift action. Student associations organized rallies, and opposition leaders, including Bengal BJP legislators, called for an independent investigation.
Shocking Autopsy Revelations
- Possible Gang Rape: Doctors who accessed the autopsy report indicated the possibility of a gang rape. According to Dr. Subarna Goswami, the injuries and evidence suggest the involvement of multiple perpetrators. The autopsy also revealed that the victim was sexually assaulted before her death, ruling out suicide.
Arrests and Ongoing Investigations
- Prime Suspect: The police have arrested 33-year-old Sanjoy Roy, a civic volunteer, in connection with the crime. Roy had access to various hospital departments due to his connections with senior officials. Allegations of previous misconduct have also surfaced against him.
- Leadership Changes: Dr. Sandip Ghosh, the former head of RG Kar Medical College, was placed on leave and then controversially reinstated as Principal of Calcutta Medical College. His leadership during the case has faced significant criticism.
Government and Legal Actions
- State Response: West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has called for the death penalty for the accused and expressed support for the protesting doctors while urging them to continue patient care. The state government has increased security in hospitals and is prepared to hand over the case to the CBI if progress stalls.
- CBI Involvement: Following concerns about the investigation’s progress, the Kolkata High Court transferred the case to the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI). The CBI has already made 19 arrests and is questioning medical personnel in connection with the crime.
Violent Protests
- Reclaim the Night Protest: The ‘Reclaim the Night’ protest in Kolkata turned violent as a mob stormed RG Kar Medical College, vandalizing the emergency ward and police vehicles. The chaos underscores the growing demand for justice and safety in medical institutions.
As investigations continue, the case has become a focal point for national outrage, with widespread calls for accountability and safety reforms in medical institutions.
