A Weekend of Surprises, Reunions, and Empowering Performances
Coachella 2024 welcomed music enthusiasts from all corners of the world to Indio, California, for two weekends packed with unforgettable performances, surprise guests, and trending moments that lit up social media. From long-awaited reunions to empowering messages, this year’s lineup had something to offer every fan.
The weekend started with Lana Del Rey gracing the stage on Friday night as the headliner. Joined by Billie Eilish and Jon Batiste, Lana’s set was a magical blend of haunting melodies and captivating visuals. Despite the star-studded lineup, Lana’s crowd size was one of the smallest in Coachella headliner history, with some attributing it to the chilly desert winds.
Peso Pluma, one of the festival’s most anticipated performers, also had a standout set that got everyone talking. The 24-year-old artist addressed criticisms about his music’s occasional references to drug trafficking and gun violence, known as narcocorridos. He surprised the audience by bringing out Becky G, marking her as the first Latina to perform at Coachella for three consecutive years, a significant moment for Latino representation in the industry.
Saturday was a day of surprises, with Tyler, the Creator taking the stage. His set, featuring appearances from Charlie Wilson, Childish Gambino, and A$AP Rocky, was a star-studded affair that kept the audience on their feet. The highlight of the evening was when Kali Uchis joined him for a mesmerizing duet, adding an extra layer of allure to the performance.
Sunday’s closing act was Doja Cat, whose infectious energy and chart-topping hits brought the festival to a climactic end.
However, the real showstopper of the weekend was the long-awaited reunion of No Doubt on Saturday night. Led by Gwen Stefani, the band hadn’t performed together since 2015, making their set a nostalgic journey for fans. Surprise guest Olivia Rodrigo paid homage to Stefani with a Gwen-inspired performance outfit, adding an extra layer of excitement.
Thh surprises continued all weekend long. Argentine DJ Bizarrap brought out the legendary Shakira during his set, setting the internet ablaze. The Columbian superstar, who was rumored to have been campaigning for this year’s headlining slot, didn’t need it afterall. Shakira not only delivered a stellar performance but also announced her upcoming World Tour, titled Las Mujeres Ya No Lloran World Tour, much to the delight of her fans worldwide.
Coachella’s influence on the music industry was evident with the rise of emerging artists like Raye. Her powerful performance, which included the emotionally charged ‘Ice Cream Man,’ not only shed light on her personal experiences but also garnered immense support from the crowd, marking a significant step in her career.
Beyond the stage, Coachella’s legendary parties attracted celebrities like Taylor Swift and Travis Kelce, who were seen enjoying performances and dancing the night away. Swift and Kelce were spotted backstage at the Mojave tent watching Jack Antonoff perform with his band Bleachers, and later, they joined the crowd during Ice Spice’s set at the Sahara tent. Ice Spice even shouted out her famous bestie from the stage, “Taylor motherf—ing Swift”!
Looking back, Coachella 2024 showcased both established icons and rising talents, creating moments that will be remembered for years to come. With surprise collaborations, empowering messages, and unforgettable performances, the festival once again proved why it remains a pinnacle of pop culture and entertainment.
