A LOOK INTO APPLE TV+ SERIES “SUGAR” WITH KIRBY HOWELL-BAPTISTE

Apple TV+ is set to launch its newest series, “SUGAR,” on April 5th, promising audiences a thrilling dive into a world of mystery, intrigue, and complex relationships. Starring Colin Farrell as the enigmatic John Sugar, the series introduces viewers to a captivating narrative woven with secrets and suspense. However, it’s not just Farrell’s character that steals the spotlight; his co-star Kirby Howell-Baptiste, known for her roles in “The Good Place” and “Killing Eve,” shines as Ruby, Sugar’s right-hand woman and a pivotal figure in the show’s intricate storyline.

In a recent interview, I had the pleasure of speaking with Kirby Howell-Baptiste about her role in “SUGAR” and delving into the depths of her character, Ruby. Kirby’s enthusiasm for the series and her portrayal of Ruby was palpable, offering insights into the dynamic between her character and Sugar, as well as the overall tone of the show. Check out the interview below:

“Ruby is more than just Sugar’s ally; she’s a force to be reckoned with in her own right,” Kirby explained. “The role was perfectly described to me as M meets Q from James Bond. She’s the brains behind the whole operation as well as someone who’s very tech-savvy.”
One of the intriguing aspects of Ruby’s character is the intentionally ambiguous nature of her relationship with Sugar. Kirby elaborated on this, saying, “We don’t know what the root of their relationship is, but Sugar and Ruby have known each other for a really long time. They’re really close. They have this mutual respect and they know each other very, very well. Ruby probably knows Sugar better than anyone else, and vice versa.”

This complexity extends beyond their personal connection and into the central mysteries of the series, particularly the case of a missing person that Ruby becomes entangled in. “Ruby plays a central role in Sugar’s missing person case as well as other events that unfold throughout the series,” Kirby revealed. “It’s very exciting to play this character who sits in the center of two worlds because it offers a lot of intrigue both as an actor and as a character.”

Kirby emphasized the multifaceted nature of the characters in “SUGAR,” noting, “I’m trying to figure out Ruby’s intentions, but at the same time, Ruby is trying to figure out this bigger story of what’s going on and what she’s a part of. It’s not cut and dried. In fact, I don’t think there’s a single character in the show that is exclusively good or bad. They’re all really complex.”

Throughout the interview, Kirby’s passion for her craft and the intricacies of “SUGAR” were evident. Her portrayal of Ruby promises to be a highlight of the series, adding layers of depth to an already compelling narrative. As audiences prepare to immerse themselves in the world of “SUGAR,” the dynamic between Sugar and Ruby, along with the web of mysteries they navigate, are sure to captivate viewers and leave them eagerly anticipating each new episode.
